15. HALLSTATT - EUROPE TRIP APRIL 2015

 MONDAY, APRIL 20th
HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA
Known for it's Salt Mines

We were only a few days too early, the mine opened on the 25th
We road up to the top in a Vehicular (tram) to check out the views

Looks like a sleepy little village

We found some beautiful graves.  They are rented by family members who pay monthly
for these lots.  When they can no longer make payments the body is exhumed.  There is
a building with skulls that we wanted to see, but the doors were closed and locked.
Tourist season was not quite here in this little town

Many of the roads we took were only one lane.  They were always winding through little villages.
We are on our way to Garni (next to Berchersgarden.)  The guest house we stayed in was my favorite
This mountain is called "Sleeping Witch"
 The Alps were beautiful

Another place that was closed and would not be open until mid May was the
"Eagles Nest" (Hitlers Retreat) you can see the building on the top of this mountain

THE PILLARS HIDING THE WINDOWS

THE DEVIL'S FOOTPRINT
Story behind the footprint:  The Architects of this church bet the devil that they
could build the church without any windows showing.
The devil lost the bet and in a rage he stamped his foot in the floor and left.
